A gay professor Mr. Sriniwas Ramchandra Siras was found dead in his room in Aligarh. This was the news in most of the Hindi and English dailies across India. As far as I guess, most of those who read newspaper must have read this news, even those who just turn the pages of news paper, go through this kind of news, the reason being that the word “Gay” tickles them. In the 21st century, it’s still a taboo among general Indian community to even speak of Gays or Lesbians, huh leave out having a different sexual orientation.
The country which gave the world most elicit books on Sex and Love, Kama sutra being the world famous, the country where architecture on temples and palaces portrays various sex positions and different sexual orientation be it Khajurao temples or even the most sacred Jagganath temple of Puri, suffers from mean mindedness on these issues.
I just feel when shall we grow up? I am not telling to move on the path of the West but shouldn’t we atleast be Indians in true sense who have had an open flare for approximately everything under the universe, we have had Gays and lesbians characters even in the most respected and Holy epics like Mahabhartha. Leave girls even boys feel uncomfortable discussing these things, even in close room discussions. You ask someone about his or her sexual orientation or what he or she thinks about sex and it seems you have done the biggest mistake of your life. If at all you have unnatural sexual orientation, you will be deserted as soon as the world knows about it. The worse part of the game is that the youngsters of India about whom our nation boasts of, are involved in these mean activities, as in the case of Prof Siras, it was AMU students who recorded his relationships through a secret camera and later demanded action against him. Though the Court took the right stand by staying the decision of AMU Board but the question remains, Till when do we need courts to solve such issues, when shall we grow up and above all these???
